Education: A Powerful Tool for Empowerment | ACER ESG
Education is one of the most powerful tools we have. It empowers individuals with knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities, enabling them to make informed decisions and contribute positively to society. Education opens doors to countless opportunities, fostering both personal and professional growth. Most importantly, it plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of poverty.
Acer Philippines shares this belief in the transformative power of education and is committed to providing equal opportunities for learning and development. This commitment extends not only to the less fortunate but also to individuals with physical challenges.
Acer Philippines’ partnership with Margaretha Home for the Blind began in 2011. What started as a simple donation project has blossomed into a long-standing collaboration that continues to grow stronger each year.
Margaretha Home for the Blind, founded by the Sisters of Christian Charity (SCC) from Paderborn, Germany, began its work in Manila in 1997. The home initially cared for 15 visually impaired girls and young women, many of whom came from impoverished backgrounds or were abandoned. The sisters provide comprehensive care, from daily living skills training to formal education. The girls either attend schools equipped with specialized resources or receive education and training in-house.
The foundation’s vision is clear: “To see a community of blind people living decently and with dignity, a community of blind people who support and care for one another.”
Acer Philippines brings Acer’s long-term mission of bridging the gap between people and technology to life through its contributions. It provided the foundation with laptops and monitors for their learning programs. These have become essential tools for the development of their technical and digital literacy and improve their learning experience.
This partnership has also deepened employee engagement through Acer Philippines’ outreach program under Project Humanity. Every year, employees visit the foundation for a Christmas celebration. It is more than just a celebration of gift-giving. Employees had the opportunity to interact with the students and create a bond. This annual event is about sharing time, joy, and connection.
The annual outreach program with Margaretha Home for the Blind is one of the most memorable and impactful experiences I’ve had as an employee. It has become a beloved company tradition, where first time volunteers are invited to perform a dance number choreographed by the girls. I can’t help but smile every time I think back on my dance experiences with them. During these visits, each volunteer is paired with 2-3 children, teaching and interacting with them in meaningful ways. The time spent there made me realize how blessed I am to be an able-bodied person.

While visual limitation can present significant challenges, it should never limit the potential for a full, meaningful life. At Acer, we believe that by promoting social awareness and fostering an inclusive environment, we can help our visually impaired brothers and sisters thrive. Education and advocacy are key to creating a world where blindness is not seen as a barrier, but as another way of experiencing life.
