Acer Circular Economy Model

Acer Circular Economy Model

Acer is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its products during the product life cycle by integrating the concept of circular economy. To implement our green product policy, we take a responsible approach by carefully considering the environmental impact at every stage of the product life cycle. We work to reduce the use of hazardous substances and raw materials, progressively phase out environmentally sensitive materials, and enhance information transparency. At the same time, we continue to collaborate with suppliers across the entire supply chain and ensure that our products comply with all relevant international regulations.

Product Life Cycle Management

  • During the product design and development phase, we incorporate circular economy thinking and actively promote material innovation, opting for materials with minimal environmental impact, such as post-consumer recycled plastics, for use in computer and display products. We also extend the use of these materials to various products within the Vero series, including projectors, computer peripherals, and luggage. Additionally, we incorporate ocean-bound plastics into the touchpads of laptops and the Vero Ocean series of peripherals. At the same time, we focus on modular design and component-sharing strategies — for example, progressively adopting a standardized stand structure across monitor products to maximize parts commonality. Through design innovation such as modularity and structural standardization, we reduce resource consumption, improve product repairability and durability, extend product lifecycles, and lessen the environmental burden across the entire lifecycle. In terms of chemical substance management, we have established lists of banned, restricted, and disclosure chemical substances to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals. Acer rigorously screens materials from the product design stage to minimize potential environmental and health risks. To improve product energy efficiency, we use the U.S. ENERGY STAR standard as a design benchmark, meeting or exceeding ENERGY STAR specifications and helping users contribute to energy conservation and carbon reduction.

  • During the manufacturing phase of our products, we collaborate with suppliers to enhance resource utilization efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and implement proper waste management practices. We also drive manufacturing process transformation to increase renewable energy adoption rates, effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the production process. Since 2019, we have been following the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) Chemical Management List to monitor chemicals used in the manufacturing process, including toluene, benzene, beryllium dust, chlorinated organic solvents, hexane, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), and ozone-depleting substances. This has been incorporated into the key focus areas of our annual on-site audits. In 2021, we further revised our requirements in alignment with the RBA Chemical Management List, necessitating suppliers to comply with the updated chemical list starting from 2022. This revised list includes chemicals such as bromopropane, dichloromethane, methanol, tetrachloroethylene, and trichloroethylene. We also continue to monitor industry specifications, evaluate expanding this inventory, reduce risks for workers and the environment, and improve both communication and checks in on-site audits.

Acer places great importance on the efficient use and reuse of resources during the manufacturing phase. Through supply chain management, we enhance resource utilization in manufacturing processes, reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and implement waste management practices.

  • In the product transportation phase, we work closely with our logistics partners to formulate the logistics strategy, with a focus on transitioning to low-carbon transportation. We continue to reduce carbon emissions from transportation by using electric vehicles, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and sustainable marine fuel (SMF), and further reduce environmental impact by optimizing overland transport through consolidation operations.

  • In the product use phase, we have set a target to achieve: Notebook energy consumption decreased by 31% and desktop computer energy consumption decreased by 32% compared with 2020.

  • In the product disposal phase, we offer multiple recycling channels, ultimately ensuring proper recycling and disposal by qualified recyclers and processors. For detailed information, please refer to the Product Recycling.

We collaborated with our suppliers through the Acer Earthion initiative to minimize environmental impact throughout the design, manufacturing, and transportation stages. Suppliers have installed solar panels and implemented the use of renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions. They have also enhanced their waste management systems, reducing the use of plastic bags in the production line and minimizing the excessive use of security tape when removing containerized pallets, thereby reducing non-recyclable plastic packaging. In addition, the gradual introduction of electric vehicles and biofuel in our product transportation process has also helped us reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For more details, please refer to the Acer Earthion.

Life Cycle Assessment and Product Carbon Footprint

In response to the global low-carbon trend, Acer, as a leading brand, is dedicated to offering consumers more sustainable and eco-friendly products, enhancing product competitiveness, and meeting customer demands. Since 2019, Acer has been producing product life cycle assessment reports and carbon footprint reports for flagship products. Gradually, we have developed them for more notebook computers, desktop computers, and monitors. By analyzing detailed data on product carbon footprints, Acer aims to identify the carbon hotspots of its products and provide feedback to its upstream supply chain. The goal is to reduce carbon footprints and promote carbon reduction actions throughout the supply chain. In late 2021, the life cycle assessment results of our monitor product, B247Y, received independent third-party verification.

In 2023, we have obtained a verification statement from a third-party organization for the comprehensive cradle-to-grave carbon footprint calculation of the Aspire Vero AV15-53P notebook computer. The system boundary of the Aspire Vero AV15-53P product carbon footprint includes five stages: raw materials, manufacturing, transportation and distribution, use, and disposal. The carbon footprint calculation result for each AV15-53P notebook computer is 148.53 kgCO2e. Through this product carbon footprint analysis, Acer not only gains a deeper understanding of the carbon emissions hotspots of the product but also assesses the suppliers' ability to provide primary data on product carbon footprints. This information will serve as the basis for proposing measures to reduce product carbon footprints, improve the quality of product carbon footprint data, and establish suppliers' carbon management and reduction capabilities.

From 2022 to 2024, we selected representative notebook and monitor products, conducted a full life cycle assessment or product carbon footprint analysis, and had some of the results verified by a third party.

In 2025, Acer completed product life cycle assessments or product carbon footprint reports for consumer notebook computers, commercial notebook computers (including Chromebooks), commercial desktop computers, and representative monitor products, with a cumulative disclosure of nearly 300 product carbon footprint reports.
