Acer becomes Official IT Infrastructure Sponsor for International Olympiad in Informatics from 2017-2021
BERLIN, GERMANY (2015-09-02)
Acer announces that it will become the official IT infrastructure sponsor for the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in a 5-year partnership from 2017 to 2021. Acer will “power the IOI” by providing all the equipment and on-site technical support needed for the host country to run each IOI contest.

As the official IT infrastructure sponsor, Acer will supply notebooks for IOI contestants and staff, tablets for team leaders and committee members, servers to run content management systems and language translations, in addition to all networking equipment. Acer and IOI also plan to extend this partnership to include a youth informatics innovation program for contest winners to take the challenge to the next level.

“Acer and IOI share a love for computer technology,” said Jason Chen, Corporate President and CEO at Acer. “Students of today are the leaders and innovators of tomorrow; therefore Acer is keen to support young talent in their passion for this exciting and fast-developing discipline. Education is one of our focuses and we want to ensure the next generation is getting the technology and education to prepare them for the future.”

“This partnership will greatly benefit the IOI,” explains IOI CFO Eljakim Schrijvers, “as it allows both Acer and the IOI to focus on what they do best. The agreement will reduce the financial threshold required to host an IOI, and enables our volunteers to concentrate on the cultural, intellectual and algorithmic quality of the contest, confident that the infrastructure necessary for the event is in good hands.”

Four out of the five host countries have been announced by IOI, they are: Iran (2017), Japan (2018), Azerbaijan (2019), and Singapore (2020).

At the IOI 2014 contest held in Taiwan, Acer was a platinum sponsor and provided over 800 computers to the event which was attended by participants from more than 80 countries.

About the IOI
The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is one of the world's top five science competitions aimed at secondary school students. The competition not only helps foster an interest in information technology in students and bolster their problem-solving skills, it also seeks to highlight promising talents in the field and offer opportunities for outstanding students from around the world to engage in cultural and technical exchanges.

Inaugurated in 1989, the IOI is organized annually in and by one of the participating countries. Students compete individually and try to maximize their score by solving a set of informatics problems during two competition days. The competition tasks are of algorithmic nature; however, the contestants have to show such basic IT skills as problem analysis, design of algorithms and data structures, programming and testing. The winners of the IOI belong to the best young computer scientists in the world.
