Acer today announced an initiative to provide clean energy for its U.S.-based operations. The company purchased enough green power to offset 100 percent of its carbon emissions from electricity at all U.S. facilities. The purchase of more than 27 million kilowatt-hours of green power in the form of renewable energy credits (RECs) will reduce emissions from Acer’s U.S. facilities through the end of 2015. Along with the renewable energy purchase, Acer has elected to become an EPA Green Power Partner and is now included in the Green Power Leadership Club and is also listed on the 100% Green Power Users and Top 30 Tech & Telecom top partner ranking lists.
A world leader in information and communication technology (ICT) and a Dow Jones Sustainability Index-listed company, Acer has a dedicated sustainability strategy of which its green power purchase is a part. In addition to reducing U.S. emissions, the company is committed to conducting an annual greenhouse gas inventory, improving efficiency in its products, operations and data centers, and engaging its supply chain to address climate change risk through its membership in the Carbon Disclosure Project Supply Chain Program. The company has established global emissions reduction targets of 30 percent by 2015 and 60 percent by 2020.
“EPA is excited to welcome Acer America Corporation as a Green Power Partner and congratulates them on their No. 24 ranking on our Top 30 Tech & Telecom list of the largest green power users,” said Melissa Klein, communications director of EPA’s Green Power Partnership. “By opting to purchase renewable energy, Acer America Corporation is helping to grow the nation’s clean energy economy and reducing harmful carbon pollution. The company’s impressive commitment to use 100 percent green power serves as an example of leadership for others to follow.”
Acer’s strategy also includes supporting the American government’s policy action on climate change. In 2013, Acer America Corporation formally signed the Business for Innovative Climate Change and Energy Policy (BICEP) Climate Declaration by the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economics (known as Ceres). This initiative involves working with government policy makers to develop a more effective set of policies and regulations in response to climate change and encouraging the United States, one of the world’s leaders in carbon emissions, to move toward becoming a low-carbon society.
“Acer is committed to reducing our carbon emissions and we’re pleased that this purchase of green power will offset 100 percent of these emissions from electricity at our U.S. facilities,” said Emmanuel Fromont, President of Acer America Corporation. “We are excited to work with Renewable Energy Choice to acquire renewable energy certificates as an element of Acer’s global climate change strategy and will continue to consider RECs as an option for meeting our global emission reduction goals.”
RECs are the way that green power is tracked and traded in North America; they are used by thousands of U.S. and Canadian organizations, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to decrease environmental impact. The RECs purchased by Acer are sourced from a blend of renewable energy types including wind power and biomass and are certified by Green-e® Energy, the nation’s leading certification program for renewable energy.
Acer selected Renewable Choice Energy, one of the industry’s leading global providers of green power, as its supplier for its renewable energy credits.
“It’s a privilege to work with Acer, and we are proud that they selected Renewable Choice when making their first green power purchase,” said Aran Rice, VP of Sales for Renewable Choice. “We look forward to a continuing clean energy partnership.”
